History
Boston University was chartered in 1869 by Lee Claflin, Jacob Sleeper, and Isaac Rich, three successful Methodist businessmen whose abolitionist ideals led them to envision and create a university that was inclusive. Boston University’s policies provide for equal opportunity and affirmative action in employment and admission to all programs of the University.
Over its 167 years, the University has expanded, reconfigured, and relocated in order to meet the needs of its students and to serve the community. During those years, its community has expanded from the children of New England Methodists to the entire world.
Boston University is proud to count Martin Luther King, Jr. among their alumni. Other notable alumni include the first woman to earn a Ph.D., the first woman admitted to the bar in Massachusetts, the first Native American to graduate with a doctorate in medicine, and the first African-American psychiatrist in the United States.

Boston University offers major and minor concentrations in more than 250 academic and pre-professional fields of study. The liberal arts form the foundation of the educational experience while the Schools and Colleges advance professional training and applied learning.
