Overview

Bowling Green State University has more than 21,000 students from 49 states and 75 countries.  Nearly 80 percent of its 900+ full-time faculty have earned the highest possible degree in their fields.  BGSU is set in Bowling Green, Ohio, and is within driving distance of many popular U.S. cities, such as Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburg, and Milwaukee.

History

Bowling Green was established in 1910 as a teacher training institution.  Although it held its first classes in 1914, its first buildings were not used until the following year.  In 1929, Bowling Green began offering four-year degree programs through the College of Education and the College of Liberal Arts.  Bowling Green became a university in 1935, the same year the College of Business Administration and graduate programs were added.  The Graduate School was established in 1947, and the first doctoral degree was awarded in 1963.  In the last four decades, six more colleges have been added, including the College of Health and Human Services, College of Musical Arts, and the School of Technology.

Extension programs began in 1946, and twenty years later Firelands College, a regional campus serving several counties, was established.  This campus offers associates degrees in 14 areas as well as provides a two-year foundation of baccalaureate degree programs.

Academics

While Bowling Green State University was originally established as an institution for educators and boasts today that it is the 14th largest producer of teachers in the United States, it offers more than 200 undergraduate majors.  In addition to its seven undergraduate colleges, BGSU offers Master’s and doctoral level programs as well.  BGSU prides itself on comfortable class sizes that allow a more personal education experience.

Some of the undergraduate programs offered are:  Accounting, Advanced Technology Education, Art, Biochemistry, Biology, Broadcast Journalism, Business Administration, Business Education, Business Systems, Computer Science, Creative Writing, Criminal Justice, Digital Arts, Early Childhood Education, Economics, Electronics and Computer Technology, Film Studies, Finance, Health Care Administration, Information Systems Auditing and Control, Interior Design, Interpersonal Communication, Long Term Care Administration, Management Information Systems, Nursing, Nutrition Sciences, Planned Program, Political Science, Respiratory Care, Sport Communication, and Telecommunications.

Many Master’s programs are also offered, which include Accounting, Applied Statistics and Operations Research, Computer Science, Curriculum and Teaching, Educational Teaching and Learning, Family and Consumer Sciences, Industrial Technology, Mental Health Counseling, and Public Administration.

American Culture Studies and Technology Management are just two of the 17 doctoral programs.

Center for Online and Blended Learning

Bowling Green State University’s Office of Distance Learning, COBL (Center for Online and Blended Learning) began as a way to promote distance learning and to support the faculty and staff with web-based courses.  COBL currently offers a Bachelor of Science in Advanced Technological Education; Bachelor of Liberal Studies; and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  Graduate Degrees include Master of Education; Executive Master of Organization Development; and Master of Arts in English.  A Doctor of Philosophy in Technology Management is also available as well as graduate certificates in International Scientific & Technical Communication; Food and Nutrition; and Quality Systems.

Accreditation

BGSU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to offer full degree programs online.

Transfer Students

Students who have attempted at least 12 collegiate credit hours will be considered transfer students.  If students cannot be admitted on high school merits, they must complete 24 credit hours and have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average to be considered for admission.
