History
Eastern Kentucky University was founded over a century ago as Eastern Kentucky State Normal School with only 7 faculty members and used buildings from old Central University, which was founded in 1874. This institution was charged with taking students and creating educators who would work in rural schools to bring about reform in Kentucky’s primary and secondary education. Eastern Kentucky began offering a four-year degree program in 1923 just before being renamed Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College, but it suffered some setbacks with the Great Depression and then again during World War II. However, the College recovered quickly after the War, enrolling about 2,000 students in the late 1940s. The 1960s also proved prosperous for Eastern Kentucky. In addition to beginning programs in allied health and nursing as well law enforcement, the College’s enrollment doubled then doubled again while it trained more public school teachers than any other institution in the state. In 1966 it became Eastern Kentucky University and has since flourished, becoming a distinguished regional university with outstanding faculty.
