Overview

With four campuses in Ohio and many online opportunities, Franklin University serves over 10,000 students, domestic and international, each year and specializes in educating professionals who already have some work experience; however, students range from new high school graduates to retired senior adults. The Franklin education is as unique as the individual and can be tailored to meet any need whether that is just a few courses to improve existing skills or pursuing a degree to develop an entirely new skill set. The four cornerstones of Franklin’s educational philosophy are ensuring academic quality, providing access to educational opportunities, adapting to the needs of students, and responding to changes in society, professions, and the business community.

History

Franklin began in 1902 as the School of Commerce in Columbus, Ohio. Sponsored by YMCA, the institution was dedicated to the education of nontraditional students and grew from only offering bookkeeping studies to offering a two-year college course in accounting by 1913. Seven years later the University was given degree-granting authority by Ohio and offered four-year evening programs in several concentrations that led to a Bachelor of Commercial Science. In 1933, the School of Commerce changed its name to Franklin University in honor of Benjamin Franklin, and it continued to operate for the next thirty years as part of YMCA until it became incorporated as a not-for-profit, independent educational institution in 1964. Franklin has flourished through the years and operates an institution whose course offerings are driven by the students’ needs, not by a desire for financial gain. In 2001, Franklin developed the following Guiding Principles as the foundation of its decision-making process: Working for Students; Ensuring a Quality Academic Product; Serving Our Markets; Building Strategic Relationships; Supporting, Encouraging, Developing and Recognizing Our People; Running Like a Business; and Leading in Education.

Academics

Franklin University offers undergraduate majors in Accounting, Applied Management, Business Administration, Business Forensics, Computer Science, eMarketing, Financial Management, Forensic Accounting, Healthcare Information Systems Management, Healthcare Management, Human Resources Management, Information Technology, Management, Management Information Sciences, Marketing, Organizational Communication, Organizational Leadership, Public Safety Management, and Web Development.

Graduate programs include Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Computer Science, and Master of Science in Marketing & Communication.

Whether a student is interested in an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree, a subsequent bachelor’s or a joint program of study, Franklin has many areas of opportunity.

Online Learning

Franklin University recognizes the importance of flexibility for today’s adults. The University’s Virtual Campus provides numerous undergraduate options as well as an MBA program. Although online course students are independent learners, Franklin’s faculty work to make sure these students have all the support they need through chat room discussions, e-mail, bulletin board posts, teleconference calls, and interaction with teams.

Military Partnership

Franklin University has a unique partnership with the U.S. Army National Guard as one of the first institutions to be approved to provide online distance learning to U.S. soldiers. Franklin offers several undergraduate and graduate degree opportunities. Check out Franklin’s GoArmyEd initiative for more information on this program.

Accreditation

Franklin University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Financial Aid

Franklin is committed to helping students meet their educational expenses by exhausting all federal, state, local, and institutional resources with the least amount of debt incurred to the student. Franklin’s financial aid office offers step-by-step guidance in applying for aid and offers informational articles on their Web site regarding forms and deadlines, scholarship programs, and payment options, just to name a few.

Tuition and Fees

If you would like to learn more about tuition and fees, please fill out the following form and you will be provided with detailed information about the costs and fees associated with attending Franklin University.

Overview

Eastern Kentucky University offers over 160 degree programs and serves more than 15,000 students each year. The University’s 17:1 student to faculty ratio helps maintain the small-town college feel on which Eastern Kentucky prides itself, while its size does allow it to offer many resources such as online courses in sound academics, financial aid opportunities, and career placement support. While EKU stresses academics and educational success, it offers its students many leisure opportunities as well, including over 175 student organizations, intramural sports, and musical groups.

History

Eastern Kentucky University was founded over a century ago as Eastern Kentucky State Normal School with only 7 faculty members and used buildings from old Central University, which was founded in 1874. This institution was charged with taking students and creating educators who would work in rural schools to bring about reform in Kentucky’s primary and secondary education. Eastern Kentucky began offering a four-year degree program in 1923 just before being renamed Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College, but it suffered some setbacks with the Great Depression and then again during World War II. However, the College recovered quickly after the War, enrolling about 2,000 students in the late 1940s. The 1960s also proved prosperous for Eastern Kentucky. In addition to beginning programs in allied health and nursing as well law enforcement, the College’s enrollment doubled then doubled again while it trained more public school teachers than any other institution in the state. In 1966 it became Eastern Kentucky University and has since flourished, becoming a distinguished regional university with outstanding faculty.

Academics

Eastern Kentucky University has five major Colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business & Technology, Education, Health Sciences, and Justice & Safety. The University offers undergraduate opportunities such as Accounting, Assets Protection & Security, Aviation, Child & Family Studies, Clinical Laboratory Science, Computer Electronic Networking, Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, Fire & Safety Engineering Technology, Health Education, Homeland Security, Industrial Technology, Insurance, Nursing, Occupational Science, Paralegal Studies, Political Science, Public Relations, Recreation & Park Administration, Social Work, Statistics, and Wildlife Management.

Graduate programs include the Educational Doctoral Program, Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Music, Master of Public Administration, and Master of Public Health.

Distance and Online Learning

Eastern Kentucky University uses several methods to deliver distance education. Interactive TV courses, Internet courses, Kentucky Virtual Campus, Correspondence, and Kentucky Education Television Network (KET) telecourses are all ways that the University is meeting the needs of students whose schedules do not allow time for a traditional classroom education. In addition to these distance learning tools, EKU has seven campuses: Richmond, Corbin, Danville, Manchester, Ft. Knox, Somerset, and University Center of the Mountains.

Accreditation

Eastern Kentucky University is accredited by the commission of colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Additionally, EKU’s many programs are also accredited by respective accreditation agencies. A full listing of memberships and accreditations can be found on the University’s Web site.

Financial Aid

EKU wants to make college affordable for every student who has a desire to learn. The university can assist potential students with federal and state scholarships, grants, and loans as well as institutional aid based on merit, special talents or accomplishments, and need. EKU Financial Aid provides FAQs, forms, general information, policies, and links on their Web site, and more information may be obtained by contacting the office directly.

Overview

Cleveland Institute of Electronics (CIE) is a technical college devoted to the education of technical skills through distance learning. CIE helps students meet the demands potential employees face in today’s ever-changing world of technology by offering two associate degrees and numerous certifications in electronics and computer technology. All of CIE’s courses are offered online, giving individuals the opportunity to advance their education at their own pace instead of trying to fit into the schedules dictated by institutions that only offer traditional classrooms.

History

In 1934, the Cleveland Institute of Electronics was founded as the Smith Practical Radio Institute. Within 40 years, the Institute had grown to over 40,000 students spanning 70 countries. The Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and Schools approved the Associate in Applied Science program in 1978. Just three years later, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers decided to allow CIE students to join IEEE as student members. World College, a subsidiary of CIE, was accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council in 1992, and 8 years later CIE and World College students made the leap into online learning by taking their first online exams. In 2004, CIE established its Computer Associate Degree.

Academics

CIE offers courses that are based on lessons that teach basic theories applicable to many areas of electronics and computer technology. Intermediate and advanced electronics courses are available for those who have an electronics foundation and want to build on that knowledge. CIE also has two Associate Degrees in Applied Science programs, but any of CIE’s courses may be applied toward an associate degree.

CIE’s approach to learning is a patented program called the AUTO-PROGRAMMED teaching method, which allow its students to learn electronics in steps determined by the individual student. CIE also has dedicated staff to offer feedback, encouragement, and guidance that is prompt and thorough. One tool used by their instructors is the online chat room where students can log on and talk with an instructor during designated office hours. If a student is unable to chat during office hours, he or she can always contact the instructor via e-mail.

Resources

The Cleveland Institute of Electronics is strictly an online institution, which means that there is no campus or classrooms; however, CIE students will find many of the same resources offered by traditional colleges and universities. CIE has a textbook buyback program that allows students to sell their textbooks back to CIE for tuition credit. Students may also be interested in the discounted pricing offered through CIE’s Bookstore on Microsoft software or in purchasing professional-quality test equipment, which is also available through the Bookstore.

The Electron, CIE’s online school newspaper, provides additional information resources available to its students. The Electron offers career advice, articles on new technology developments, an alumni forum, and the instructors’ corner.

Accreditation

CIE is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council, which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

Financial Assistance

CIE has several tuition assistance programs. Military service members on active duty in the armed forces may be eligible for reimbursement up to 75% of tuition. The Institute’s courses are eligible for Basic Tuition Assistance and the Associate Degrees are eligible for Up-Front Tuition Reimbursement. Qualified veterans may also be eligible for tuition assistance under the Veterans Education Assistance Program. Students may also want to inquire about the CIE Financing Special Education Loan.

Tuition and Fees

If you would like to learn more about tuition and fees, please fill out the following form and you will be provided with detailed information about the costs and fees associated with attending the Cleveland Institute of Electronics.

Academics

People often forget that furthering one’s education is a valuable investment. In any type of investment, you want to make sure that you place your resources in a reliable, credible product or service, right? When allocating time and money for your education, you should choose an accredited online school for the same purpose. Here are just a few reasons why college accreditation should matter to you.

Employment opportunities

One of the most popular reasons for individuals to seek online education is to gain knowledge that will improve employment prospects. Whether the desire is to learn a new skill, take a refresher course in a current field, or attain an advanced degree, more knowledge means improved career opportunities. While earning a degree brings personal satisfaction, the benefits of such an achievement is also recognized by current or potential employers. For this reason, many employers check not only previous work experience, but the educational history of applicants, including the credibility of your school. A degree from an unaccredited or questionable university can hurt an applicant’s chances of obtaining employment.

Financial aid or assistance

If you are returning to school and have a low-paying job, bills, and a family to support, you might need financial assistance. In order to obtain financial aid, you must attend an accredited school. Only accredited schools can provide students with financial aid or assistance and are recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE).

Overall online education experience

Accreditation is a type of acknowledgment that the college and the courses and degrees it provides meet certain requirements and standards set forth by accreditation boards. This guarantees that you are going to receive a quality education for your investment. Knowing that your school is accredited will give you peace of mind, which will allow you to focus on your coursework—not your institution’s credibility.

An accreditation organization may be considered a regional accreditor. There are currently six of these in the United States. Each of these organizations carries out the accreditation process for the states in its region. These agencies are recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), which is the primary national voice for voluntary accreditation and quality assurance to the U.S. Congress and U.S. Department of Education (USDE). Unlike National Accreditation, these organizations below accredit the entire school and not just some of the programs provided at the school.

Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA)—Accredits institutions located in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (NEASC-CIHE)—Accredits institutions throughout New England, including Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Higher Learning Commission (NCA-HLC)—This association accredits the largest group of institutions, which includes Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)—Accredits institutions located in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)—Accredits institutions throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities (WASC-ACSCU)—Accredits institutions located in California, Guam, Hawaii and the Pacific Basin.

Regardless of which online university you have chosen to attend, be sure to check the complete list of regional accreditation agencies to make sure the name of your school is accredited by one of the organizations listed above.

Accrediting agencies fall into two major categories: institutional and programmatic. There are just under twenty institutional accrediting organizations in the United States that accredit colleges and universities and approximately sixty programmatic organizations that accredit specific programs. These two groups can be broken down into four subcategories:

Regional Accrediting Organizations

National Faith-Related Organizations

National Career-Related Organizations

Programmatic Accrediting Organizations

Regional Accrediting Organizations

These organizations accredit colleges and universities within a designated region of the United States. For example, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the recognized regional accrediting organization in eleven Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia). Regional accreditation applies to the entire institution, not just a particular program.

National Faith-Related Organizations

Just as the name suggests, this type of organization accredits faith-based institutions in the United States. Some accrediting bodies may focus on a particular type of faith-based institution, such as the Association of Advanced Rabbinical and Talmudic Schools Accreditation Commission, while others—like the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools Accreditation Commission—have a much broader focus.

National Career-Related Organizations

There are accrediting organizations that concentrate on a particular type of career. Two examples include the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences, Inc., and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. One would focus on any schools that offer cosmetology programs, and the other would focus on health education programs.

Programmatic Accrediting Organizations

There are many accreditors that exist for the sole purpose of giving their stamp of approval on a certain type of program, regardless of the type of institution or its location. These organizations check the quality of programs such as Marriage and Family Therapy, Pharmacy Education, Aviation, Engineering and Technology, and Landscape Architecture. Because of the fine scope of each programmatic accrediting organizations, there are many more of these—more than the other three categories combined.

Due to the diverse offerings of higher education institutions, a one-type-of-accreditation-fits-all would not be enough to adequately address the quality of each institution’s various programs. If the school you have chosen has not been accredited by one of the accrediting organizations recognized by either the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education (USDE), you should be very careful. The school could potentially be considered a diploma mill or an unofficial school that will hand you a degree that will not carry any value.

The purpose of both national and regional accreditation agencies is to award or deny accreditation. However, there are some differences between these two types of accrediting organizations.

Regional Accreditation

As you can imagine, this type of accreditation focuses on geographic location. There are six organizations that focus on accrediting institutions in a specific area of the United States. The standards are usually very rigorous, and the evaluation process looks not only at the school as a whole, but also the standards of each of its programs. It is important to note that many regionally accredited schools do not transfer credits or degrees easily—and sometimes they do not transfer at all—from nationally accredited schools. In other words, if you attended a nationally accredited school for your first sixty credit hours and are trying to transfer to a regionally accredited institution, you may lose a large portion of those credits.

National Accreditation

National accreditation is performed on a much larger geographic scale. National accreditation organizations began forming for the purpose of evaluating colleges that offer the same types of programs. For example, institutions all over the United States that offer an education curriculum might be accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). Another common type of national accreditation organization is faith-based. Schools that offer faith-based programs will seek accreditation by one or more of the faith-based accreditation agencies that evaluate such programs regardless of geographical location. National accreditation usually means that credits from a regionally accredited institution can be easily transferred. These types of universities are usually less expensive as well.

Both types of accreditation are provided by private institutions that review the schools with very strict guidelines. Regardless of what school you choose to attend, be cautious and make sure it has received a national or regional accreditation. Additionally, if you plan to transfer, ask the admissions office about the school’s policy for both regionally and nationally accredited credit transfers.

For a complete listing for both nationally and regionally accredited schools, visit the web sites for the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education (USDE).

Many online colleges and universities boast that they are accredited.

Many online colleges and universities boast that they are accredited. By now you’ve probably heard or read the term enough to know that you should choose an accredited college. However, maybe you’re not sure what accreditation means or why it is so important. Don’t worry—this academic lingo can be broken down into plain English.

What is accreditation?

College accreditation is an acknowledgment that the college and the courses and degrees it provides are approved and meet certain requirements and standards set forth by accreditation boards. Online schools are reviewed for quality by such organizations as the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education (USDE), and helps ensure that you are going to receive a quality education. Without accreditation, the degree you obtain from your college might not be worth much more than the paper it is printed on.

Are all colleges accredited?

It is important to note that online schools are not required to be accredited, which paves the way for so many online diploma mills, scams, and questionable practices by some institutions. However, many online colleges have sought out accreditation on their own accord by contacting independent accreditation agencies to obtain approval. In plain English, this means they are willing to put their name on the line in order to be reviewed by the standards and quality expected by accreditation boards.

How does accreditation affect me?

So how does online accreditation affect your online college experience? It provides students the same privileges to proper admissions practices, course registration processes, opportunities to receive financial aid or other assistance, as well as other student services. Ultimately, accreditation means that you can be confident that you are receiving a quality education that will be respected by future employers.

Is it enough for an institution to claim that it is accredited?

Just as there are many legitimate online colleges, there are also schools who try to cut corners. Some even advertise that they are indeed accredited when the association who has given the school its seal of approval is not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as legitimate accreditation organizations. So don’t believe everything you read—these so-called accredited institutions will be a waste of your time and money. Be careful.

Scholarships do not have to be repaid once you graduate from college. Most scholarships are merit-based, but some may be based on a combination of merit and need.

Scholarships do not have to be repaid once you graduate from college. Most scholarships are merit-based, but some may be based on a combination of merit and need. Scholarships are not awarded by the government, so there is no limit on the amount of money you can receive. Additionally, you do not have to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to apply for a scholarship, although it is recommended that all student complete and submit the FAFSA because you may qualify for federal grant money.

Academic Scholarships

The most common type of scholarship is an academic scholarship. An academic scholarship is based on your grade point average, and this is one type of scholarship offered by many schools. Good students are good investments for colleges, so many will reward hard-working students who maintain a high grade point average and/or do well on standardized tests like the ACT or SAT.

Minority Scholarships

You may qualify for scholarships just by being you. Minority scholarships can be based on race, gender, or ethnicity. A group of people that is or has been considered underprivileged have the right to an equal education, and this is where minority scholarships come into play.

Athletic Scholarships

If you have a natural talent for any sport, you may qualify for an athletic scholarship. Many schools recruit for these scholarships but sometimes give consideration to athletes willing to work or play for the team for a year before being put on scholarship. Remember, it doesn’t have to be about the fame and glory of being a star athlete. Even if you sit the bench most games while earning a free education, it will be worth it when you graduate and start a career with no debt.

Other Scholarships

There are many different types of scholarships out there for some of the most unusual things, such as scholarships if you know many facts about the FBI, like to skate, are unusually tall, or can write or draw.

What types of scholarships are there? Scholarships usually fall into two major categories: merit-based and need-based. Merit-based scholarships are based on excellence in a specific area while need-based scholarships are awarded based on financial need.

I meet some, but not all, of the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. Should I still apply? No. There will be too many applicants who meet ALL of the requirements, and your application will probably be tossed out in the first round. Focus your time and energy on those scholarships for which you are sure you qualify.

What are scholarship selection committees looking for? It really depends on what type of scholarship you are seeking. Each sponsor is looking for something different based on the criteria listed in the scholarship. Read the scholarship requirements carefully.

If I get a scholarship, can I still get other types of financial aid? You can still receive other types of aid, such as loans and grants (if eligible); however, your scholarship will reduce the amount of money needed to meet the financial need. This may affect how much loan or grant money you can receive.

Can I find more scholarship opportunities by paying someone to search for me? You will be able to find a scholarship just as well as anyone else. Typically, if someone claims they can find more scholarships for you for a fee or guarantees you a scholarship if you pay them to search for you, it’s probably a scam. Use caution when dealing with these types of companies or websites.

When should I apply for scholarships? You should start your search early in order to meet scholarship deadlines. Check the guidelines very carefully for each scholarship application. Most financial aid offices recommend that you start your scholarship search a year before you plan to begin classes.

How much does it cost to apply for a scholarship? Legitimate scholarships should not require any type of fee to apply. If you are asked to pay in order to submit your application, you should beware of a scam.

Your scholarship essay is your one shot at winning over the selection committee and, in turn, winning some cash for college. Remember that you want to stand out as the unique candidate in a sea of applicants. Here are some tips to make sure that you’ve covered all your bases.

Check your spelling and grammar. There is no room for mistakes here.

Use a thesaurus. While you don’t want to get too exotic with your word choices, you should look for different adjectives and verbs to give your essay variety.

Be positive. No one likes a wet blanket! Keep the spirit of your essay focused on good.

Back up your ideas with examples.

Read the essay requirements and make sure you have met all formatting guidelines.

Get help from a writing workshop or writing center. Check with your high school or a local university for writing assistance.

Type the essay and have an educated, trustworthy person proofread it.

Print the essay on a high-quality writing paper and submit in a typed or neatly labeled package—good presentation is important.

Refrain from listing all of your awards, accomplishments, and activities. Incorporate these into your stories and concrete examples that will back up your main points.

Don’t grow a sense of humor in your writing. While you might be a funny person, trying to be funny in an essay can often miss the mark. Play it safe and stick to what works.

Be yourself. Try not to inflate your stories and accomplishments because you think it will impress the committee. If you’ve met the eligibility requirements for the scholarship, your great qualifications should shine through without embellishment.

Merit scholarships are generally awarded for special interests or academic, artistic, or athletic merit. A few merit scholarships do take into consideration an applicant’s financial need, but most are awarded based on one’s talent. Merit scholarship applicants must meet certain criteria in order to be considered for the award.

Criteria

Some companies may award scholarships to their employees’ children or spouses, while other funding sources select recipients based on their involvement and contributions to their community. Membership organizations may award scholarships to students who have exhibited an interest in promoting their same goal. Some schools may use scholarships for a particular major as a recruiting tool to keep their college community diverse, encouraging a well-balanced representation.

Things to Consider Before Applying

Don’t waste your time applying if you don’t meet all the requirements. Scholarships are free money, so you can imagine how many people will apply for just one scholarship. If you begin your scholarship search early, you may have time to build up to the requirements for the scholarship, like getting your grade point average just a little higher or working on a community development project.

You should focus heavily on the scholarships for which you are fully qualified, making sure to read all of the eligibility requirements carefully. Before submitting any application, essay, or proposal, take your time and have one or two well-educated friends or mentors review your work.

An essay or proposal is often a requirement when applying for scholarships and grants so that the selection committee can see which candidates stand out from a large group of very qualified applicants. You could be competing with hundreds of candidates, and a well-written essay could be the factor that encourages the committee to award you thousands of dollars. There are some general rules to follow when writing a scholarship essay.

Brainstorm

Get as many ideas on paper as possible in no particular order.

List your accomplishments (enlist help from parents, friends, or mentors).

Write down the three most influential leaders in your life and two characteristics of each that made them positive influences. Do you exhibit any of those characteristics?

Think about some of the difficult times or experiences you’ve been through and write down how you overcame those obstacles.

Write down your goals, both short-term and long-term.

Read other scholarship essays to get a better idea of what makes a good essay.

Decide on a topic

While you don’t want to limit yourself, you also don’t want to be so broad with your topic that you can’t meet the maximum word requirements.

You want the topic to reflect who you are and what you’ve accomplished.

Try to choose a unique topic. For example, although working in a soup kitchen is rewarding and helpful volunteer work, the selection committee has probably already read more than their fair share of soup kitchen stories. You should try and write about something more unique and eye-catching.

Write!

Once you’re chosen your topic, try not to veer off course. Stick to it and make a point.

Be inspirational, but don’t overdo it.

Show your unique style, but be careful of trying to be “cute” or “funny” with your style.

Tell your story in your own words. Most people love a good story—make them love yours.

Don’t oversell yourself so that you come across as haughty or condescending.

While there are scholarships available for practically any special talent, extraordinary intelligence, or volunteer service, finding them may prove to be more difficult than applying or winning them. The key is to be very thorough in your research, leaving no stone unturned, and to apply for a scholarship even if you think there is only a very small chance that you will receive it.

Financial Aid Office

Start your search with the financial aid office at your school. They will have the inside information on any academic or departmental scholarships offered by your college and will often have the application and eligibility requirements right there in the office—a true one-stop shop.

College Departments

It never hurts to contact the department for your field of study to see if they know of any outside scholarships for which you may qualify. They might be able to put you in touch with a corporation or non-profit organization looking to assist students with college tuition.

Community

Many businesses, organizations, and associations within your own community have set up scholarship funds to help give back to a community that has supported them. Start with religious organizations, civic clubs, and other non-profit associations.

Companies and Corporations

Many companies are willing to invest in the education of future colleagues. By helping a student in a particular field of expertise succeed, they are investing in the future of their business. Some may even keep you on their radar as a hopeful new hire.

Scholarships Databases

The internet is a great resource for finding scholarships. For example, if you are good at swimming, do a search on “swimming + scholarships.” There are even databases that provide a comprehensive list of available scholarships based on some initial information that it gathers from you. When using an online database, just be careful to avoid financial aid scams. A rule of thumb is that you should never have to pay to find scholarships. Any site that says it will find more scholarships if you pay to have them search for you is probably not legitimate.

Most prospective students hope to secure enough scholarship money to pay for all college expenses, including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and maybe a little extra just for fun. The chances of getting enough money to pay for all of those fees can be slim. That’s why it’s beneficial to apply for more than one scholarship, even if some of them only award small amounts of money.

Full Scholarships

Full scholarships generally cover the entire cost of attendance. These are usually awarded by the college and are given to the students with the most impressive academic success or abilities. Many athletic programs offer full scholarships to their most talented athletes.

Partial Scholarships

Don’t worry if your academic credentials aren’t at the genius level. There are still opportunities to receive one or more partial scholarships from a school. For example, you may qualify for a partial academic scholarship based on your grade point average and also be eligible to receive a departmental scholarship based on previous academic success in a particular subject.

Many outside scholarships are also partial scholarships, meaning they only pay for a portion of your educational expenses. A religious organization may award a partial scholarship for books, while a local business might pick up the tab for your room and board. The key is to piece many of these small scholarships together until you have at least enough money, if not more, to pay for all of your expenses.

You’ve graduated at last. Hopefully, you have a job ready and waiting for you or are very close to securing employment. As you’re admiring that crisp diploma, it hits you—I have to begin repaying all of those student loans. How does that work exactly? Do you get home from the graduation ceremony still dressed in your cap and gown to find loan sharks waiting at your door or a bill in the mailbox? Fortunately for you and all other recent graduates who filed away the student loan paperwork and ignored it, some loans offer a grace period.

Federal Perkins Loan

The Federal Perkins Loan offers a nine-month grace period before you must begin making payments. If you choose to go back to school during this nine-month period, make sure that you enroll with at least a half time status and request a deferment. This will ensure that you can receive the nine-month grace period again in the future. Anytime you file for a deferment with a Federal Perkins Loan, regardless of type (economic hardship, student, etc.), you will be given a six-month grace period after the deferment time has expired.

Federal Stafford Loan

With a six-month grace period, the Federal Stafford Loan provides a shorter grace period than the Federal Perkins Loan. Unlike the Federal Perkins Loan, you are not given another grace period after deferment, no matter what type of deferment you requested. Also, if you allow your grace period to expire without re-enrolling in school, you will not be able to receive another six-month grace period in the future.

Other Loans

The repayment terms and conditions will vary for other loans. To find out the duration of the grace period on any loan, start with the loan promissory note, which should have details regarding the grace period your loan. If you do not have your promissory note, contact your lender. If you’ve forgotten who your lender is, use the following information to locate your loans.

Student loans are loans offered to students pursuing a postsecondary education and must be repaid. The federal government usually issues student loans at a lower interest rate than private loans. Students may finance their education through private lenders; however, the interest rate is much higher and you may not be able to defer payments until after you finish college.

Federal Perkins Loan – This is a low interest, long-term loan made to the student based on financial need. The student must be enrolled and attending full time and the maximum loan amount is $4,000 (undergraduate) or $6,000 (graduate) per year.

Federal Stafford Loan - This loan is also made to the student, and the student must be enrolled and attending at least half time. There are two types of Stafford loans:

Subsidized – If you meet the need-based requirements, you may be eligible for a subsidized Stafford loan. This means that as long as you are enrolled and attending half time or more, you will not be responsible for the interest while in school and the principle is deferred.

Unsubsidized – If you do not show a financial need for the loan, you can receive an unsubsidized Stafford loan for which you are responsible for paying the interest, but the principle is deferred. You may choose to defer the interest as well, but you will ultimately be responsible for paying it.

Federal Parent PLUS Loan – This loan is available to the parents of dependent students who are enrolled and attending at least half time. The parent does not have to demonstrate a financial need. Like the unsubsidized Stafford loan, the parent will be responsible for paying the interest throughout the life of the loan. A parent may borrow up to the total cost of school less any other financial aid received.

Federal Graduate PLUS Loan – This loan is just like the Parent PLUS loan except that it is in the student’s name.

Private/Alternative Loan – After federal student aid options have been exhausted, a student may want to contact a private lender. A private lender is not associated with the federal government or any educational institution. Approval of this time of loan is not guaranteed, and the interest rate, which could be variable, is based on credit.

Grants are amounts of money awarded to an individual or group in order to finance an activity. Grants are sponsored by federal agencies or other organizations and usually do not have to be repaid. Most student aid grants are need-based, meaning that you must meet a financial need to be eligible for them. By completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), your financial aid office can determine if you are eligible for a federal grant. Some types of federal grants include:

Federal Pell Grant

When you complete the FAFSA, you are immediately notified of Pell Grant eligibility. Eligibility is determined using the EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) on the SAR (Student Aid Report), which is created when your FAFSA is processed. If you are eligible for a Pell Grant, then you automatically receive the grant and may also be eligible for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). The amount awarded is based on your school’s cost of attendance and your student enrollment status.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant is also need-based. Pell Grant recipients are given priority for this grant. You must be an undergraduate student to receive this grant, and priority is given to full-time students.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)

The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) provides up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of study to full-time students who have Pell Grant eligibility.

National SMART Grant

The Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant Program awards up to $4,000 for third and fourth year of study to students who are Pell Grant eligible and are majoring in physical science, life science, computer science, mathematics, technology, engineering, or in a foreign language that is critical to national security.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants up to $4,000 per year for students who plan to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.

In a perfect world, every student would be able to graduate from college, find work quickly, collect a huge salary, and pay off student loan debt with all of that newfound cash. Unfortunately, life may have other plans for you like graduating, finding your dream job (halfway across the country), relocating, buying a house, marrying, having children, buying a bigger car, and the list goes on and on. Before you know it, you’re out of school and have envelope after envelope popping up in your mailbox requesting payment for this loan and payment for that loan. Just the paperwork alone is overtaking your life, not to mention the fact that all of those small monthly payments sounded great when you were getting each loan. Now that you’re adding up the monthly payments, you realize that you could be paying for a new car with all the money you’re sending out.

Lower Monthly Payments

A consolidation loan combines all of your federal loans into one with lower monthly payments.

Flexible Repayment Programs

Many consolidation loans offer flexible repayment options, which allow you to determine what will be most comfortable for your monthly budget.

Fixed Interest Rate

The interest rate for consolidating federal student loans is a weighted average of the interest rates of all the loans and does not change throughout the life of the loan.

Improved Credit Score

If you’re having trouble paying the high monthly payments on several loans, this could negatively affect your credit rating. By consolidating your loans, you can cut your monthly payment a great deal and stop missing payments.

Easier to Organize

Having only one loan instead of several just makes sense as far as paperwork and remembering payments is concerned. Simplify your monthly bill paying.

Tax Deductible

The interest on many educational loans is tax deductible.

There are a couple of tax breaks for students attending an eligible educational institution, which the IRS defines as any college, university, vocational school, or other postsecondary educational institution eligible to participate in a student aid program administered by the Department of Education. Your school should be able to tell you if it qualifies as such.

Hope Credit

The Hope Credit allows you to claim up to $1,650 per tax year for qualified education expenses for each eligible student, which can include tuition and fees, books and supplies, and room and board. This credit may be taken only for the first two years of postsecondary education, and the student must be pursuing an undergraduate degree or other recognized education credential. Additionally, the student must be enrolled at least half time for the academic period.

Lifetime Learning Credit

The Lifetime Learning Credit allows you to claim up to $2,000 per tax year for qualified education expenses for all students enrolled in an eligible education institution. This credit is available throughout the student’s college career and can even be applied for courses taken to improve job skills. With this credit, a student does not have to be pursuing a degree and must be enrolled in at least one course for the academic period.

Student Loan Interest Deduction

If your modified adjusted gross income is less than $70,000 ($140,000 if filing a joint return), there is a deduction for interest on a student loan used for higher education. You can reduce your taxable income by up to $2,500.

Tuition and Fees Deduction

This deduction can reduce your taxable income by up to $4,000; however, if you claim this deduction, you will not be able to take the Hope Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit.

The key is to research which option will earn you the most money on your taxes. Check out Publication 970 (Tax Benefits for Education) on the IRS website for more details regarding eligibility.
