Florida Tech
Overview
Florida Tech, or Florida Institute of Technology, is located in Melbourne, Florida, and has a diverse student body of over 5,000. The majority of these students pursue degrees in engineering or technology. Florida Tech draws students from all 50 States and 99 countries across the world and has been rated by Barron’s Guide as a “Best Buy” in College Education. Fiske Guide to Colleges also named the University one of the top 14 technical institutions in engineering, and Princeton Review rates it among the top southeastern colleges. A partner of the University of Alliance, which promotes online learning through world-class education and state-of-the-art technology, Florida Tech includes many NASA astronauts as well as numerous military personnel in its growing list of alumni.
History
In 1958, Dr. Jerome P. Keuper founded Brevard Engineering College as an opportunity for scientists, engineers, and technicians working for NASA to continue their education. The College moved to Melbourne in 1961 and began a decade of building classrooms and administrative buildings. Brevard was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1964 then changed its name two years later to Florida Institute of Technology. In 1972, at the request of the Navy, the institution began its first off-campus program in Maryland. In 1990, the Claude Pepper Institute for Aging and Therapeutic Research opened. Dr. Anthony James Cantanese, a highly regarded urban planner and former president of Florida Atlantic University became the fourth president in 2002.
Academics
Florida Tech offers associate degrees in both Liberal Arts and Business Administration, while bachelor degrees include Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Healthcare Management, and Marketing. Human Resource Administration minor is offered to complement any bachelor degree.
Graduate degree programs include Master of Business Administration with concentrations in Accounting & Finance, Healthcare, Management, and Marketing. A Master of Science in Information Technology is also available.
Research
Florida Tech has many research facilities which include the Institute for Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Institute for Computing and Information Systems, Institute for Energy Systems, Institute for Marine Research, Institute for Materials Science and Nanotechnology, National Center for Hydrogen Research, and National Center for Small Business Information.
Research is also performed in Astronomy and Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Lightning, Solid State and Condensed Matter Physics, and Space and Magnetospheric Physics as well as the field of photo-voltaic powered automobiles and robotics.
Online Learning
Many students are attracted to Florida Tech’s distance learning approach with some finding it more enjoyable than a traditional classroom environment. Classroom tools include streaming video lectures, message boards, live chat rooms, e-mail, and mp3 lectures. Florida Tech knows that in addition to having the latest technology to aid learning, students still need personal attention. The university provides online faculty and student support, a program representative, and IT support and customer service.
Accreditation
Florida Institute of Technology is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
