Liberty University Accreditation

Liberty University is certified to operate in the State of Virginia by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and is regionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. Liberty is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International. As well, a number of specific programs are approved by accrediting and licensing bodies for specific disciplines (i.e. Nursing, Sport Management, and Education programs).

Overview

Liberty University is the world’s largest evangelical university. With over 20,000 students both on and off-campus from all fifty states and over seventy countries around the world, Liberty provides the highest quality education in a devout Christian environment.

Not only is Liberty the largest, it is also the fastest growing evangelical university. Liberty offers excellence in academia with more than 60 areas of study. A few of the popular areas include: business, music, communication, pre-med, nursing, aviation, biblical studies, and Law.

History

Liberty University was founded as Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971 by Jerry Falwell, the Senior Pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church. The school was previously known as Lynchburg Baptist College and Liberty Baptist College before its current name was installed in 1985.

The central mission of Liberty University states: “To develop Christ-centered men and women with the values, knowledge, and skills essential to impact tomorrow’s world. The mission is carried out for resident students through a rigorous academic program and structured social environment. It is carried out for external students in a comparable academic program but without the structure of the resident community.”

Academics

Liberty University’s educational philosophy is based on the incorporation of primary Christian beliefs and liberal arts principles. Its programs are intended to prepare students for leadership roles in society.
Academic programs consist of: 55 Undergraduate residential programs, 15 Undergraduate online programs, 32 Graduate programs (residential & distance learning), and 21 Graduate online programs.

Liberty University Schools

Liberty University has a number of schools focusing on academic excellence. They include: The Center for Academic Support & Advising Services (CASAS), College of Arts & Sciences, Helms School of Government, School of Business, School of Communication, School of Education, School of Engineering and Computational Sciences, School of Religion, and the Liberty University School of Law.

Willmington School of the Bible

Formerly known as Liberty Bible Institute, The Willmington School of the Bible was created for students who want a clear and complete overview of the English Bible. Graduates plant churches, assume pastorates, serve as associate pastors, youth pastors and leaders, teachers and leaders in the local church setting. As well, graduates are serving in prison ministry, chaplaincy, broadcasting, foreign and domestic missions, nursing home ministries, and much more.
