Marist College
Overview
Marist College is an independent, coeducational, comprehensive liberal arts college with a main campus located along the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, New York. Marist College services over 4,000 traditional students, 750 adult continuing education students, and over 850 full- and part-time graduate students. Marist has been named one of the nation’s best by Princeton Review, recognized for excellence by U.S. News & World Report, and noted for its leadership and use of technology by Barron’s Best Buys in College Education. The college has a 15 to 1 student-faculty ratio, and on average, 80% of its faculty members hold the highest potential degree in their fields. The mission of Marist College is to help students develop the intellect and character required for enlightened, ethical, and productive lives in the global community of the 21st century.
History
Marist College began its history in 1905 when the Marist brothers came to the Hudson Valley with the intention of training young men to continue the Marist brothers’ vocation as educators. What began as a house with some property has grown over the years to over 150 acres. The first college courses were offered in 1929 under the name Marian College, and in 1946 it became a full four-year college. It was renamed Marist College in 1960 and began to include a wider community. The last four decades have seen Marist expand both academically and physically.
