Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Northeastern University’s mission is to educate students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and to create and translate knowledge to meet global and societal needs. Northeastern is a private, research university that prides itself of being a leader in interdisciplinary research, urban engagement, and the integration of classroom learning with real-world experience.
History
In 1896, the Boston YMCA organized the Evening Institute for Young Men. Two years later, the first class of the Department of Law of the Boston YMCA convened. Over the next decade, the Automobile School, the Evening Polytechnic School, and The School of Commerce and Finance were created. The name of the institution had evolved into Northeastern College, but in 1922 it was changed again to Northeastern University of the Boston Young Men’s Christian Association. The university’s most rapid growth came post World War II, and seven colleges were added from 1953-1982. Under new leadership in 2007, Northeastern University drafted a new Mission Statement and Academic Plan-a commitment to support and grown Northeastern’s academic enterprise in its entirety.
