Norwich University

Overview

For 20 years, Norwich University’s Cadets and traditional students have shared the same campus. Norwich is a small and private university that blends the military tradition of nearly two centuries along with a wide range of traditional undergraduate degree programs. While students in The Corps of Cadets participate in concentrated military training, every student benefits from a distinct and leading learning environment that promotes academic success as well as leadership development. Norwich is one of a few Vermont colleges that attract students from 40 states and 29 foreign countries. Approximately 1,900 cadets, traditional students, and commuters attend Norwich University. The student faculty ratio is 14:1.

Norwich students engage in much more than just textbook learning. They participate in the field through labs, internships, field trips, undergraduate research, building real things, as well as blowing up real things and rebuilding them. Graduates have a reputation for solving real-world problems and having a strong work ethic.

History

Norwich University was founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge. It was the first private military college in the United States and the origin of the nation’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program. Partridge strived to make the curriculum more practical, scientific, and liberal. He expanded the classical curriculum to include modern languages, history, political economy and engineering. The merger with Vermont College in 1972 allowed Norwich to expand its academic base, make the school more inviting to women, and add a non-military lifestyle. In 1981 Norwich acquired four adult-centered programs from Goddard College. The programs broadened the curriculum by permitting Norwich to open its doors to nontraditional learners, diversify culturally, and significantly increase the enrollment of minority students. The creation of the first Peace Corps Preparatory Program in 1987, the expansion of internship programs, and the encouragement of volunteer community service, symbolizes an expansion of the University’s mission as it relates to practical learning and social service.

Academic Programs

At Norwich University, academics are about communication and hands-on learning. Norwich consists of 28 bachelor’s degree programs, teacher licensure program, and four ROTC programs.

The Corps of Cadets prepares students to become competent and responsible citizens. As the birthplace of ROTC, Norwich houses all four branches of the armed services that include: the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force, as well as a Coast Guard commission track. Norwich’s Corps of Cadets program allows individuals to gain military experience while earning a degree.

The Corps of Cadets Graduates make worldwide contributions as leaders in business, government and the military. They learn and implement core values such as initiative, integrity, honor, and loyalty.
